Derma Peel is a new skin
restoration process, commonly referred to as "the lunch time peel" because the
procedure takes only minutes, and most patients can return to work immediately afterward.
Derma Peel has been used at European spas for several years. This technique has recently
received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States. The Derma Peel procedure uses highly controlled vacuum and pressure to move microscopically abrasive crystals over the surface of the skin. This action causes little or no discomfort while it gently removes the outer layer of the skin. By repeating this process over the course of several weeks or months, the younger, softer skin moves to the surface, revealing significant textural and color changes. Unlike Dermabrasion, acid peels, or laser
resurfacing, Derma Peel causes little or no discomfort, requires no anesthesia, requires
no recuperation period, and treats all skin types. |

| Laser resurfacing, or "laser peel," is a process whereby
a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser is used to remove areas of damaged or wrinkled skin layer by
layer. When new cells form during the healing process, an attractive, younger-looking skin
surface appears. Laser peels can minimize the appearance of fine lines around the mouth
and the eyes and can treat facial scars or areas of uneven pigmentation. Persons with olive, brown, or black skin may be at
increased risk for pigmentation changes. At Charleston Plastic Surgery, we consult with
our patients and assess their skin attributes before recommending treatments of any type. Cosmetic laser treatments are usually not
covered by medical insurance. It may be covered, however, when the procedure is used for
modification of scars or the removal of pre-cancerous skin growths. In any event, we can
discuss with you how to contact your insurance carrier to determine whether they will
cover such treatments. |

| Spider veins, unsightly clusters of red, blue or purple veins on
the thighs, calves and ankles, is a problem that plagues approximately one half of adult
females. These veins can be treated with sclerotherapy, whereby the veins are
injected with a sclerosing solution, which causes them to collapse and fade from view
(Varicose veins, which are larger than spider veins, can also be treated with
sclerotherapy, although often they may require surgical treatment). We perform your sessions in our office. The
sessions usually last only about 15 to 45 minutes and are minimally discomforting. |
